At the "Hearts Alive" shelter, women affected by violence and their children find professional therapy, security, and training for an independent life.
A Unique Place for a New Beginning
The "Hearts Alive" shelter in Lusaka is the only facility of its kind in the entire country. It offers a safe refuge for women and children who have suffered severe emotional and physical violence.
In this protected place, a path begins out of the shadows of trauma toward a self-determined future. To achieve this, house founder Mercy N. and her team have created three pillars:
- Safety and Refuge:
A protected space away from abusers, where those affected can first find peace and recharge their strength.
- Professional Therapy:
Qualified therapists accompany women and children through intensive, individual healing processes.
- Education and Future Qualifications:
Women learn practical job skills to stand on their own feet in the future. Children are given the opportunity to go to school.
From Shadow to Light: A New Beginning for Families
When women and children arrive at the shelter, they are often deeply frightened and traumatized. The daily hardship and poverty in Zambia lead to increased violence.
A completely new chapter begins for them at the shelter: while the children learn to be children again through loving care, play, and therapy, the women build a real livelihood. It is important to know: children without parents also often find protection here. With learned skills and new self-confidence, they break the cycle of poverty and dependency.
We give women and children the urgently needed time and space to heal. And we give them the strength and the tools to take their lives into their own hands permanently."

One women's and children's shelter for an entire country – and that with enormous demand: Director Mercy N. and her team urgently want to expand the intake capacity to enable even more affected women and children to have a new beginning.
