"Amahoro" School Project in Uganda
Caleb’s big heart for poor children
Who could know better what others need than someone who has experienced it themselves? As a child, Caleb survived the merciless streets of Uganda. After finding a way out, he decided to stand up for street children himself.
Our project partner Caleb in Uganda lived on the streets of the capital Kampala for several years as a child. He saw many of his friends die from hunger, illness, or violence. One day he got lucky: He was able to work as a housekeeper and, in return, received accommodation, food, and schooling. Caleb has made it his life’s mission to be there for the more than 10,000 street children on the streets of the capital Kampala. We proudly support him to the best of our ability.
The worst thing about being a street child was the loneliness. People acted as if they couldn’t see my suffering. Sometimes I wished I would die. No child should ever have to feel that way again – that is my wish for the children of Uganda."
A proverb says: Give someone a fish and you feed them for a day; teach them to fish – and you feed them for a lifetime. Caleb provides both: A food distribution point in the slum gives street children something to eat. At the "Amahoro" school, poor and orphaned children learn for life. And a farm project reduces the school’s costs while also teaching the children valuable lessons about agriculture.
The school: Learning for a life without poverty
More than 1,200 children are learning for life in the "Amahoro" school project. Many of them come from poor families; some found their way here through the feeding project. Many live on the school grounds and experience the community here as a family where everyone looks out for one another. From kindergarten age through graduation, which is equivalent to our Abitur, the pupils spend a childhood here that enables them to live independently as adults.
Farm project: Valuable food, valuable knowledge
Providing more than a thousand children with regular meals costs enormous sums. Caleb’s farm project generates yields across several hectares that significantly reduce costs and make it possible to ensure a healthy, balanced diet independently of the highly fluctuating market prices. In addition, many children learn the farming trade on the farm – especially in a developing country like Uganda, a career with a future!
The children need us
Poor families in Uganda would have to choose between school fees and meals for their children – an impossible choice! So that children can learn for a better future without going hungry, there is Caleb’s "Amahoro" school project. But it can only exist with our help.
Help Caleb give the poorest children in Uganda a future worth living.
