After the flash flood: Many have lost everything
One week after the flash flood, people’s suffering is still immense. HELFENDE HÄNDE is on the ground to bring help.
At the end of August, a massive wave of water, mud and debris devastated large parts of the mountain region in northern Nepal. According to current reports, more than a thousand people have died, and thousands more are still missing. HELFENDE HÄNDE is on the ground to bring help to the survivors.
Our team has reached Devighat and is seeing with their own eyes the destroyed houses, filled with mud and debris. And the people who have lost their homes and still somehow have to carry on. Bodies are still being recovered from the mud and ruins. People are still searching for their loved ones, just to be able to bury them.
We can’t undo the disaster or take away people’s pain. But we can be there for them now: with a listening ear, but above all with everything they urgently need in this situation.
What happened in the flash flood in Nepal?
On August 26, the collapse of a glacier in the Himalayas triggered a massive flood. Water, mud and rock thundered through the valleys along the border between Nepal and Tibet, hitting towns and infrastructure with tremendous force. Roads and bridges were destroyed or became impassable, and many people were cut off from the outside world.
Rescue operations are particularly difficult in the mountainous region. Mud, destroyed transport routes and still-unstable slopes make it hard to access the affected areas. Helicopters are also being used to reach people and bring supplies to hard-to-access regions.
What people urgently need now
Clothing and blankets
Many houses have become uninhabitable, entire villages wiped off the map. Many people own nothing anymore except the clothes they were wearing during the disaster.
We want to distribute clothing and blankets so that people in emergency shelters, sometimes out in the open, have at least some protection.
Pots and gas stoves
Food has made it into the disaster area, but many people have no way to prepare meals. We can buy stoves and cooking utensils at low cost fairly close to the disaster area.
Being able to cook for themselves gives surviving families the chance to do something, instead of only being able to wait.
Clean drinking water
After floods, access to clean water can collapse. Drinking water is therefore a key part of our emergency aid.
A listening ear
When we bring help, we give people the chance to share their stories and their pain with us. A simple hug that reminds them they are not alone in their suffering is a “relief item” in its own right!

Our team is organizing the procurement of urgently needed relief supplies on the ground: gas stoves, drinking water, clothing and warm blankets. Especially for those who have lost the most.
