Devastating Storm in the Philippines
Families Left with Nothing After Typhoon "Fung Wong"
Super Typhoon Fung Wong devastated entire islands and villages with wind speeds exceeding 230 km/h. Over one million people fled. Helfende Hände aims to bring emergency relief to families in the disaster zone.
Our project partner Jun is determined to help! He normally runs schools and children's homes. Because he works closely with people in the communities, he was able to quickly assemble a team of volunteers to support his fellow countrymen in their time of need. Now he needs our support to deliver aid supplies.
So many people have lost everything! The hardest hit are the poor, whose huts could not withstand the storms and floods. Many are left with nothing: no food, no water, often not even a roof over their heads—the desperation is immense.
After environmental disasters, the poorest communities in the country often have little government assistance to expect—and this after they have lost what little they had in the floods. All the more important that we help now! We would like to share with you the story of Libi, who barely survived the typhoon night.
Libi's Nightmare Night in the Typhoon
The warning that a typhoon is racing toward the village of Ilaya comes at the last second for many villagers—for others, too late!
Libi is checking on the chickens her family depends on in the darkness when the power goes out. Suddenly she is standing in pitch black. She first hears the rushing sound, then the masses of water engulf her and the chickens.
She freezes in fear. The water flows ankle-deep through her home. Quickly it rises to her chest. She knows: Her only chance of survival is the school—the most stable building in a village full of corrugated iron huts! Libi ventures into the raging floods...
Again and again her feet are swept away, she swallows muddy water, clings to trees. She can barely see her hand in front of her face. If she did not know the village so well, she would be lost. Exhausted, she reaches the school, someone pulls her from the floods. Weeping, Libi falls into her family's arms.
Dawn: The Village Sees What the Typhoon Has Done
The poor, who had the least to begin with, have lost everything: roofs and walls have collapsed, their belongings have disappeared in the floods—even Libi's chickens did not survive. And still knee-deep brown water flows through the area.
Super Typhoon "Fung Wong" has left so many people, especially the poor, homeless overnight in numerous villages. Their livestock have died, their fields destroyed, as well as their shops and workshops—they have simply lost everything! How are the families supposed to feed their children now?
Now the families need our help!
Our project partner Jun wants to quickly bring survival aid to the families with his team. But he can only do this with our support!
Please donate so that we can bring food, clean water, and at least simple tents for shelter to families like Libi's who have lost everything in the typhoon.
Help now and donate!
