Emergency Aid Syria
Childhood in chaos
and hardship
After 15 years of war and crisis, countless children in Syria are living far below the poverty line. They know only a life in emergency tents and without regular meals. HELFENDE HÄNDE has been helping for well over a decade – and unfortunately is still needed.
Of the approximately 24 million people in Syria, 7 million are displaced within their own country. Families have been torn apart, relatives have died, and some survived mutilated. Many have no way to provide for themselves.
As so often, children are hit hardest by these circumstances. Their barely developed immune systems are exposed to the unhygienic conditions of miserable tent camps – a deadly combination with the ever-present malnutrition.
These people are fighting for survival under undignified conditions – and the world looks away. We know: If we do not bring help for too long, many will die here. We must come back until the situation in Syria improves!
Our emergency aid team repeatedly delivers relief supplies, provided the security situation allows it. Our focus is on small, isolated tent camps whose residents live in relative safety but are cut off from all supplies. A situation in which they can all return to their home towns is not foreseeable, even now.
Summer heat and winter storms
The only protection from the elements for people here is a tent. Summer heat of around 40 degrees or winter temperatures around freezing are a deadly threat here. Winter storms and other severe weather repeatedly destroy the tent camps. That is why, in addition to food, our aid packages often include blankets or new emergency tents.
With people for people
We spoke with countless people who invited us into their simple shelters. We heard their harrowing stories, which can hardly be put into words. On the other hand, in neighbouring countries we met many people with whom we stay in contact in order to obtain affordable relief goods for Syrian families in need. As in all our deployment regions, the same applies here: contacts are everything.
Relief goods prices amid the oil crisis
The current crisis is making everything more expensive – including food and other relief goods! Now more than ever, we need support to be able to continue helping.
Officially, there is currently no war, but people’s lives still depend on our help. Will you help?
