Karamoja is drying up — and with it, hope
Countless families are suffering terribly from hunger — yet the world has no eye for the small, remote Karamoja region in Uganda.
Where our field director Monte and his response team go, usually no one helps except us. Because it is too unsafe there — or because the people there have simply been forgotten, as in Karamoja.
For years, one drought has followed the next, and families are fighting for bare survival.
As so often, we are among the far too few helpers: we are the last hope for people who are dying!
What I saw in northern Uganda has not left my mind. The thin, silky skin on the children’s small, emaciated bodies is so dried out that it ripples. Every single bone is visible. Swollen bellies and red hair bear witness to deficiency and pain.
Karamoja is one of the forgotten places in northeastern Uganda. The droughts kill the livestock first, then the people. We cannot simply stand by and watch the agonizing deaths of innocent children! That is why we bring food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, medicine to the sick, and tents to protect them from the scorching sun.
Hunger measuring tape aid: the stages of hunger
Children suffer especially in the fight against hunger. Even with the naked eye, it is easy to see how dire the situation is for the weakest. Many children are little more than skin and bones. And yet the sight of the “hunger measuring tape” is shocking: at just under 10 centimeters, the arm of this malnourished child has hardly more circumference than a 2-euro coin.
Without our help, these people are lost
We know their suffering. We know the heart-rending cries of hungry children; we know the hopeless, empty stares of desperate mothers who have to watch their children die. And we know: we can help!
That is what drives us to take on the hardship and the danger!
The upper-arm circumference of this severely malnourished child from Karamoja measures only 10 cm!
We need your support!
