School Project Uganda

This place of hope is urgently needed!

What if education is the only way out of poverty – but attending school is unaffordable? This is the exact question countless families in Uganda are asking themselves.

Although Uganda is one of the most stable countries in East Africa, poverty in the country is crushing. Schools generally charge fees that many families cannot afford, nor can they afford school materials, school uniforms, or even regular meals.

At our partner project, the Zana School in Uganda, things are different. Here, every child gets a chance.

Of our over 700 children who attend classes daily, almost all come from poor families. With us, they experience a protected childhood. They go to sleep without fear of hunger. And they receive an education that enables them to leave their poverty behind.

Emmanuel, Project Leader Zana School Uganda

The Zana district, where the school is located, is poor. More and more families cannot afford school fees – cannot even afford regular meals for their children. Helfende Hände partner Emmanuel, affectionately called "Emma" by the children, and his wife Allen know each of the children by name, know their stories and families. For the children, they are both great role models.

From a hopeless fate in the slums...

Nambasa, 8 years old, lived neglected in a slum hut. Her parents were both seriously ill and could not care for the girl – no meals, no school, no care. Every day meant a fight for survival for her – until the authorities brought her to us in 2008...

...to a self-determined life

We are very proud, because Nambasa has grown into a confident young woman and is studying administration at university. Without the school, she would probably be desperately poor today, and perhaps she would have even lost the fight for survival on the streets.

A place of future for every child – no matter where they come from
